What to Expect During Your First Audiology Appointment in Austin
A first audiology appointment includes conversation about concerns, ear examination, pure-tone and speech testing, results review, and hearing aid recommendations if needed.

Your first audiology appointment is straightforward, comfortable, and typically takes about an hour. You'll leave with a clear picture of your hearing health and, if needed, a plan for next steps.
If you've been putting off a hearing evaluation — whether from uncertainty about the process or not knowing what questions to ask — here's exactly what happens when you come see us.
A Conversation First
We start by talking with you. Before any testing begins, we want to understand your concerns, your lifestyle, and how your hearing affects your day-to-day life. This conversation shapes everything that follows. We'll ask about situations where you struggle to hear, any ringing in your ears, and your history with noise exposure or ear health issues.
Otoscopy: A Look Inside Your Ears
The first clinical step is an otoscopic exam — we use a small, lighted instrument to look inside your ear canal. This helps us rule out earwax buildup or other physical issues that could affect test results or temporarily impact your hearing. If there's significant wax present, we may recommend earwax removal before proceeding.
Pure-Tone Testing
This is the part most people picture when they think of a hearing test. You'll wear headphones and listen to a series of tones at different pitches and volumes, pressing a button or raising your hand each time you hear a sound. The results are plotted on an audiogram, which shows the softest sounds you can detect across a range of frequencies.
We also conduct bone conduction testing, which helps us determine whether any hearing loss originates in the outer and middle ear or deeper in the inner ear. This distinction guides any recommendations we make.
Speech Testing
Hearing tones and understanding speech are two different things. Speech testing measures how well you understand words at various volume levels, including in the presence of background noise. This part of the evaluation gives us a more complete picture of how your hearing functions in real-world situations.
Reviewing Your Results
Once testing is complete, we walk you through your audiogram in plain language. You'll understand exactly what you're hearing well and where gaps exist. If hearing loss is identified, we'll explain the type, degree, and what it means for you — and discuss your options from there.
Not everyone leaves with a hearing aid recommendation. Some people simply need monitoring. Others may benefit from further evaluation, such as a tinnitus assessment, a balance screening, or a cognitive health screening, which we offer as part of our broader approach to hearing and brain health.
If Hearing Aids Are Recommended
If hearing aids are the right fit for your situation, we take a measured approach to selecting and fitting them. We carry several leading manufacturers and work with you to find the right technology for your hearing loss, lifestyle, and budget. We take the time to match the right device to your specific needs rather than defaulting to a one-size-fits-all solution.
Over-the-counter hearing aids have become more widely available, and while they work for some people with very mild, uncomplicated hearing loss, they're self-fitted and lack the personalization that comes from a full diagnostic evaluation and professional programming. For most people with meaningful hearing loss, that personalized fitting process makes a measurable difference in outcomes.
No Special Preparation Needed
You don't need to do anything to prepare. The testing is non-invasive and pain-free. One recommendation worth following: try to avoid exposure to loud noise for at least 24 hours before your appointment, as prolonged noise exposure can cause temporary shifts in your hearing thresholds that may affect results.
