Professional Earwax Removal vs. DIY Methods: What You Need to Know
Professional earwax removal using otoscopic examination and controlled irrigation is safer and more effective than cotton swabs or ear candles.

If you've ever reached for a cotton swab to clean your ears, you're not alone—but it's one of the most common ways people accidentally make ear problems worse. Professional earwax removal is safer, more effective, and often quicker than you might expect.
Why DIY Earwax Removal Can Backfire
The human ear is largely self-cleaning. Jaw movements from talking and chewing naturally move earwax toward the outer ear, where it falls out or washes away on its own.
The problem starts when people intervene. Cotton swabs typically push wax deeper into the ear canal, creating or worsening a blockage rather than clearing one. The FDA has also warned against ear candles—a popular alternative remedy—citing risks that include ruptured eardrums and burns to the face and ear. These methods feel intuitive, but the anatomy of the ear canal makes them genuinely risky.
Approximately 30% of older adults experience earwax impaction, and for many, well-intentioned home cleaning is a contributing factor.
Signs You May Need Professional Ear Cleaning in Austin
Not everyone needs their ears cleaned professionally on a regular basis, but certain symptoms suggest it's time to see an audiologist:
- A feeling of fullness or plugging in the ear
- Sudden or gradual hearing loss
- Earaches or discomfort
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Dizziness
These symptoms don't always mean earwax is the culprit, but a professional examination can rule it out quickly.
What Professional Earwax Removal Actually Looks Like
At our practice, the process starts with an otoscopic exam—we look inside the ear with a specialized instrument to confirm whether wax buildup is present and assess its severity. From there, we use one of two approaches.
Manual removal uses a small instrument called a curette to carefully extract the wax under magnification. This works well for milder cases.
For a more thorough cleaning, we use the Earigator—a modern irrigation device that uses a temperature-controlled, gentle stream of water to flush out wax safely. The temperature regulation matters more than people realize; water that's too warm or too cold can cause dizziness. The Earigator is designed to minimize that risk while giving us better control and visibility throughout the process.
The whole visit is typically straightforward and comfortable.
OTC Ear Drops: A Middle Ground?
Over-the-counter ear drops designed to soften wax can be appropriate for mild cases, but they're not a substitute for professional care when a blockage has already formed. Softening agents can sometimes make symptoms temporarily worse before they improve, and they don't address impaction the way physical removal does.
If you're regularly relying on home remedies to manage ear discomfort, that's a signal worth paying attention to.
